When your business phone number is different on Google and Facebook

For owners whose doors show more than one number

The short answer

When your phone number is different on Google and Facebook, write down one master set of details for your business. Make every door match it, starting with your Google listing and your website. A second number is fine when each door says what it is for, such as a WhatsApp line for messages.

BDRI is the Bahamas Digital Readiness Index.

What a customer sees when your numbers don’t match

Say you moved from an old landline to a mobile or a WhatsApp line. Your Google listing still shows the landline. Your Facebook Page (the business page, not your personal profile) shows the mobile. Your website footer shows both. A customer who finds one of them has no way to know which is current.

Customers call the number on whichever door they found first. If that is the old landline, the call goes nowhere. If it is an old mobile, a WhatsApp message lands on a phone nobody checks.

When customers cannot find the basics, some go elsewhere. A Bahamas Chamber of Commerce case study describes a wholesaler whose only presence online was a Facebook Page and an Instagram feed, with no website of its own. Customers struggled to find its hours, prices and delivery details, some turned to businesses that showed them, and the case study says the wholesaler lost leads as a result.

About half the businesses in the 2026 edition of the index have two or more doors open. Each extra door is another way for a customer to reach you. It is also another place where a phone number can go out of date the day the business changes it.

A customer calls whichever number they see first, and that one has to work.

Why Google, Facebook and your website show different numbers

Doors usually fall out of step in one of four ways.

You changed one door and not the others. Say the new number goes on the Facebook Page the day it changes. The Google listing and the website keep the old one until someone changes them. The same happens with links. When the index re-checked the Facebook links it had on record that no longer worked, it often found the business still on Facebook, at a different link.

Of 300 businesses whose recorded Facebook link was broken, re-checking found the Page at a new link for 116 and the same Page live at a changed address for 25. The Page was not found in public sources for 157.

Some of those businesses had a website on record, and about one in four of those websites still linked to a Facebook link that no longer worked. A customer who taps that link on the website lands on nothing until someone changes it. Step 5 below covers that. The index can’t tell you how many Bahamian businesses show different phone numbers, because it does not compare numbers or names door by door.

Someone else set up the door. Only people with access to a Facebook Page can edit its phone number, address and hours, Meta’s help centre says. If a former staff member or an outside agency set up the Page, you may need them to give you access before you can change anything. The same goes for a Google listing held in someone else’s account. Getting it back is covered in who should own your Google Business Profile, and how to keep control.

Google changed the listing. Anyone can suggest an edit to a Google listing. When Google tells you about a suggested edit, you have four days to reject it before Google may apply it, Search Engine Roundtable reported on 23 September 2026. Some edits go live with no notice at all. Google may publish the change if other public information, such as your website, backs it up, so an old number left on your website can help a wrong edit reach your listing. In some regions, Google may also call, text or WhatsApp your verified number to confirm your details, then update the listing from the answers. Where Google offers it, your profile shows what it gathered under Collected info.

Two numbers with no label. A landline for calls and a WhatsApp line for messages is a normal setup. The trouble starts when a door shows both numbers without saying which is which, or still shows an old number as the main one.

What AI assistants do when your details disagree

The Four Digital Doors overview explains that AI assistants read the same doors your customers use, and an assistant repeats what it reads.

The studies so far are American, and the index has not tested what assistants say about Bahamian businesses, so read them as a guide to how assistants behave rather than as a local rate. In an audit of 10,000 US local businesses published in July 2026, Insites found that a wrong phone number was the most common mistake in ChatGPT and Perplexity answers. In December 2025, Seer Interactive found that AI models asked for large US brands’ customer service numbers almost always gave one, that about a third of those numbers did not match the brand’s own customer service webpage, and that most of the sources they cited were other websites. In a September 2026 study, the US agency Herringbone Digital looked at 600 small businesses and found the wrong detail sometimes starts with the business itself. Only about half of them published their hours in one version. Where a business had no hours on its site, the assistants often repeated its own Google listing.

So an old number left on one door can become the number an assistant hands to a customer. To see what assistants say about your business today, follow how to check what AI assistants tell customers about your business. For how they pick a business in the first place, read what an AI assistant reads before it recommends a business.

How to make your details match on Google, Facebook and your website

1. Write your master record. Use the name on your sign. Google asks businesses to use the name customers see on their storefront, website and stationery. Write down one main number, and any second number with what it is for. Google also says the number must be “under the direct control of the business”, so pick a line the business keeps when staff change. Add your hours, and your address or the area you serve.

2. Open each door and fill in the sheet. Look at each door the way a customer would, on your phone. Copy the sheet onto paper or a spreadsheet if that is easier.

Comparison sheet: your details on each door

Door Where to look Name Main number Second number and its use Hours Address or area Links to
Google listing Search your business name on Google Maps
Website The header, the footer and the contact webpage
Facebook Page The About section and the contact details
WhatsApp Business profile Your profile in the app, then a message from another phone
Apple Maps place card (the business panel Apple Maps shows) Search your business name in Apple Maps
Bing Maps, if you appear there Search your business name on Bing Maps

3. Dial every number you find. Call each number from each door on your own phone, and send a WhatsApp message to your WhatsApp number. This catches a dead line, a number that rings an old phone and a wrong country code. Bahamian numbers dial as +1 242. One US consultant found a listing that Google had built by itself with the right number and the wrong country code, so calls from the listing did not connect.

4. Fix the doors in order. Start with your Google listing and your website, and make them match each other. Local search experts call this NAP consistency: your name, address and phone number read the same everywhere. In Whitespark’s 2026 survey, 47 local search experts ranked 187 factors by how much they think each helps a business rank in the map results at the top of a Google search and on Google Maps. A website matching its Google listing ranked 15th, above matching on the map apps. Then check Apple Maps. As of 25 September 2026, Apple’s availability webpage lists The Bahamas for location management in Apple Business, so you can claim and edit your Apple Maps place card. If your business shows up on Bing Maps, check it too. Then update your Facebook Page and your WhatsApp Business profile, and last, any directory that lists you. Where a door shows two numbers, label each one, for example “Calls” and “WhatsApp”.

5. Fix the links between doors. Make sure your website links to the Facebook Page you use now. Make sure your Google listing and your Facebook Page link to a website that loads.

Keep your details matching after you change them

Whenever your number, hours or address change, change every door on the same day. Check your Google listing for suggested edits, and under Collected info if your profile has it, because Google can change the listing without you.

Questions owners ask about this

Is it a problem to have a landline and a WhatsApp number?

No. A Google listing can show a main number and up to two more, so a landline and a WhatsApp line can sit side by side. If your listing offers a Chat option, add your WhatsApp chat link there, and leave the text option empty, since Google shows only one. The trouble is an old number still shown as the main one, or a door that does not say which number is for calls and which is for messages.

Does the way I write my number matter?

No. (242) 555-0100 and 242-555-0100 are the same number to a customer, and Google formats the number itself. What matters is a different number, a missing digit or a wrong country code.

Does BDRI score whether my details match?

No. The index reads whether each door is open and working. It does not compare phone numbers or names door by door, so a mismatch does not change your score. It still matters to every customer who tries the wrong number.

Why does Google still show my old number?

A change to your phone number waits for Google to review it, and Google can reject it. A suggested edit or one of Google’s automated updates may also have put the old number back. If your profile has Collected info, open it to see what Google gathered. Keep the new number on your website so it backs up the change.

How long before Google and AI assistants show the new number?

Google may review an edit, or ask you to verify, before it shows. AI assistants catch up after the sources they read are corrected, which is why your Google listing and your website come first. There is no fixed timeline for either.

Your next step

Write down one set of details, then make every door match it.

Write the name as it appears on your sign, your main number, any second number and what it is for, your hours, and your address or the area you serve. Change your Google listing and your website to match first. Then do Apple Maps, your Facebook Page and your WhatsApp Business profile. Plan on an evening, longer if you first have to get back into an account. Google may review an edit before it shows. Your 2026 score stays as published, since the edition is locked. When the doors agree, you can ask for a fresh reading of your doors on the score webpage. It shows which doors are open and working at the time of the reading, including any link you have fixed.
